Bronzeville Bikes promotes cycling in Bronzeville and hosts neighborhood rides, repair sessions, and runs the Bronzeville Bike Box, a small nonprofit bike shop housed in a recycled shipping container at Boxville at 51st and the Greenline.
In the summer of 2015, Bronzeville Bikes also launched the Sister Cycles program, with courses that teach maintenance and repair to women and women-identifiers.
The vision first emerged from a single shipping container built out as the Bronzeville Bike Box on the once vacant lot at 51st Street and Calumet Avenue. The Bike Box operated as a combination bicycle repair shop and bike-tour headquarters. The use of the lot has since expanded, becoming the home to Boxville.
“Founded in 2013 by the Urban Juncture Foundation, Bronzeville Bikes is now part of the grander engagement and beautification vision of Engage Bronzeville, a part of the revitalization organization, Build Bronzeville.
